Non-Benzodiazepines

Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata. They are usually prescribed for insomnia and can be addictive. Overusing these drugs can even cause further sleeping disorders.

Antipsychotics

Antipsychotics are high on the list of medications older adults should avoid. These drugs are used to treat severe mental problems, but sometimes they are even prescribed for depression. Be extremely careful when using these drugs and consult a doctor if your behavior changes.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs

Motrin, Aleve, and aspirin. These medications can be hard on your kidneys and stomach. Try not use them over a long period of time, or at least take a break once in while.

Anticholinergics

Using these medications in the long-term can cause dementia and lead to other health problems. Tylenol PM and Benadryl are in this category.

Barbiturates

Although these medications are usually not prescribed anymore, it is good to know that they are highly addictive and should be avoided.
