Having a migraine in old age is common. Many seniors have issues with frequent or chronic headaches. Some triggers cause this condition. This article will point them out to the elderly and explain how to avoid them.

Most Common Migraine Causes in Older Adults

Hypertension

High blood pressure isn’t only bad for heart health. It can also cause migraines. High blood pressure creates a lot of pressure on vessels in the upper part of the body, and this creates stress in the head. People who have hypertension also have issues with chronic migraines.

Odors

Headaches, fainting, and hotheadedness can all be caused by strong odors. Most people, not only the elderly, react to strong smells such as varnish, lacquer, and other paint products. Some products which can be found in hardware stores can cause migraines. If the elderly have a home repair job, they should be careful what they use.

Noise

Being exposed to loud sounds can cause headaches in both the elderly and young people. Every noise which is rated above 120 decibels can even cause permanent damage to the eardrum and, as aftermath, spread the pain through entire head. It would be beneficial for seniors to wear protective earplugs in all situations where they will be exposed to noise over 100 decibels.

Medication

While medications are usually used to prevent headaches and migraines, there are those that can have opposite effect. Many over the counter meds can create these conditions. Some of them are benzodiazepines such as alprazolam and lorazepam. These types of medications are used to treat depression and anxiety. Other pills that can cause a migraine are painkillers such as codeine and hydrocodone.

Processed Food

Processed foods are full of artificial ingredients these days, and they can have an adverse effect on the human body. Aspartame, which is a synthetic sweetener, is known for causing headaches. Beverages rich in caffeine such as coffee or energy drinks can also cause migraines.
