When your parent moves in, perhaps you need to modify your home so they will feel safer. This is particularly important if they suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (see tips here). On the other hand, you must prepare yourself, both emotionally and mentally. This is a huge change for all of you and there are some things you need to know.

What to Do When Your Parent Moves In?

First and foremost, you need to clarify what the responsibilities are of each family member, especially if your parent requires special care. In addition, you must determine the financial expectations of the parent and other members who have some earnings.

What is the Level of Care Your Parent Needs?

This is one of the essential things to do when your parent moves into your home. See what the parent’s needs are and if your family can meet them. Is it helping with daily activities, or something else?

Don’t Change Your Lifestyle

When your parent becomes your roommate, this doesn’t mean you must quit your social life. In order to maintain the same level of happiness as before, you must continue to see your friends. Don’t neglect them. Your physical and mental health is equally as important.

Private Space

The ideal thing would be if your parent could have a separate room – somewhere they can be alone when they need to be. Also, you need to determine what the shared areas are. In other words, make a clear distinction between shared and private space, so no one feels crowded or too heavily monitored.

Handle Your Emotions

You may experience a lot of different emotions when your parent moves into the house – sadness, anger, joy, guilt, etc. They can be very powerful and overwhelming. Learn how to control these emotions and don’t let them drive you. Always be focused on the positive things and you won’t have any problems.
